WORLD AIDS DAYYOUTH BANNER CONTEST DEADLINE
BINGHAMTON, NY - The HIV Care Network, a regional planning coalition for HIV related services, announces that the last day to enter banners in the third annual Youth Banner Contest is November 27, 2000. The contest is being held to support youth involvement in AIDS education projects throughout the region in conjunction with World AIDS Day, held annually on December 1st.
World AIDS Day events will begin at the Broome County Courthouse on December 1st at 6:00 PM, with a reading of names of those lost to the disease, and guest speaker Assemblyman Jay Dinga. At 6:30 PM, banners will be carried from the Broome County Courthouse to the First Congregational Church on Main Street by youth and others during a silent candlelight march. Awards will be presented following an upbeat celebration of life program, which begins at 7:00 PM.
This year's theme: "Make A Difference", should be incorporated into creating banners for World AIDS Day. Themes consistent with HIV prevention and AIDS education, increased awareness, reducing stigma, hope for a cure, or compassion and sensitivity toward individuals and families impacted by the disease are some of the many possible themes youth may choose for their banners.
In addition to plaques presented by the HIV Care Network, various prizes have been donated by area businesses, including tickets to see the BC Icemen and the Cider Mill Playhouse, and free pizza coupons. The banner contest is open to any interested individual, group, or organization in Broome, Chenango or Tioga County. Adolescents and college students are especially encouraged to participate.
Banners should be brought to the Broome County Health Department on 225 Front Street, Binghamton, by 5 p.m., Monday, November 27. For more information about the Youth Banner Contest or World AIDS Day events, contact the Network Coordinator at 607.778.3066.
