Winners of World AIDS Day Youth Banner Contest
BINGHAMTON, NY - First through fifth place awards were presented to area youth groups for their participation in this year's Youth Banner Contest, held in conjunction with World AIDS Day on Saturday, December 1st. Youth groups created colorful banners that included HIV prevention facts, messages of compassion, acceptance of others, and increased awareness of the AIDS epidemic. All of the youth and adult mentors involved deserve recognition for their efforts at peer education and involvement in these projects. Eleven banners were entered in the contest, and three additional World AIDS Day banners made for the occasion were brought by area groups and individuals for the silent march which took place from the Broome County Courthouse to Trinity Memorial Church on Main Street. Participants included youth from Christ the King Church, High Street United Methodist Church, East Middle School S.A.D.D., Susquehanna Valley High School and Middle School, Delta Academy, the Free Radicals, Newark Valley High School- Liberty Partnership Program, and Johnson City Community Action Team.
First place was awarded to Newark Valley High School - Liberty Partnership Program; Second place: High Street United Methodist Church youth group, Binghamton; Third place: The Free Radicals Youth Group, Binghamton; Fourth Place: Johnson City Community Action Team Youth; Fifth Place: East Middle School S.A.D.D. Plaques as well as prizes donated by Cider Mill Playhouse, Parisi's Twin Freeze, Roberson Museum, and Grippen Ice Rink were given to the groups with the top five banners. All participants received certificates for their participation.
The HIV Care Network at the Broome County Health Department wishes to thank Wegmans and the Southern Tier AIDS Program for their donations of refreshments for the event, Tioga Gardens for the flower arrangements, and the businesses listed above for their generosity in donating gifts for prizes.
