Kraham Kicks Off Tenth Annual Stop-Dwi Holiday Classic At The Charlie Howland Memorial Luncheon

Boy's Basketball Tournament To Take Place December 26-29th, 2001

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Jeffrey P. Kraham joined Binghamton City School officials, tournament sponsors and local high school basketball teams to kick off the 10th Annual STOP-DWI Holiday Classic at a news conference and luncheon today.

Mr. Kraham commended the many sponsors, local school districts and community organizations for their continued commitment to the nationally recognized high school sporting event.

"Each year, I grow more and more impressed with our community and the hundreds of high school athletes that participate in the Holiday Classic," said Mr. Kraham. "This event demonstrates the commitment that Broome County, local businesses and our local school districts put toward ending drunk driving in our community."

Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator James F. May and Tournament Director Richard D.Westfall discussed plans concerning this year's tournament. The annual tournament will showcase top teams from Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Florida, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Bronx, New York and Broome County.

Tournament officials also paid tribute to the late Charlie Howland, a widely respected former high school basketball coach who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 1998. In recognition of the contribution that Mr. Howland made to the community, tournament officials named their kick off media and sports luncheon the Charlie Howland Memorial Luncheon.

More than 350 people attended the news conference and luncheon.
