Kraham and Binghamton City School Officials Kick Off Ninth Annual STOP-DWI Holiday Classic at The Howland Memorial Luncheon

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Jeffrey P. Kraham joined Binghamton City School Officials, tournament sponsors and local high school basketball teams to kick-off the 9th Annual STOP-DWI Holiday Classic at a news conference and luncheon today.

Mr. Kraham commended the many sponsors, local school districts and community organizations for their continued commitment to this worthwhile event. "The success and growth of the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic is a credit to the many businesses and organizations in our community - without their support the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic wouldn't be possible. This event represents the excellent partnership Broome County has with local school districts and the private sector in working to combat drunk driving in our community." said Mr. Kraham.

Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator James F. May and Tournament Director Richard Westfall discussed plans concerning this year's tournament. The annual tournament is recognized as one of the best high school athletic events in the United States and will showcase top teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Kentucky, District of Columbia, Florida and Broome County. The weekend's activities also include leadership seminars and workshops for the students to participate in as well as a health and fitness fair on the mezzanine level of the Arena.

Tournament officials also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Charlie Howland, a widely respected former high school basketball coach who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle crash in 1998. In recognition of the contribution that Mr. Howland made to the community, tournament officials named their kick-off media and sports luncheon the Charlie Howland Memorial Luncheon.

More than 350 people attended the news conference and luncheon.
