2008 Rabies Vaccination Clinic Schedule

2008 Rabies Vaccination Clinic ScheduleBINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Health Department today is announcing its 2008 Rabies Vaccination Clinic schedule and is urging all residents with a dog, cat, or pet ferret to make sure their pet is vaccinated for rabies.

Any mammal can get rabies. Humans can also get rabies from an infected animal. Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the nervous system. The virus is transmitted through saliva, usually from a bite by a rabid animal. “Getting your pet vaccinated for rabies and making sure their rabies vaccination is up-to-date is a first line of defense to protect yourself and others from this deadly disease,” said Robert Denz, Director of Environmental Health Services at the Broome County Health Department.

Rabies clinics are being held in conjunction with the Front Street Dog Shelter Alliance at selected areas throughout Broome County (April - December 2008). Rabies vaccinations will be provided to dogs, cats and pet ferrets. Animals receiving their first vaccination must be at least 3-months old. A $5 donation per animal is requested to help cover the cost of the clinic but is not required. All pets will be vaccinated regardless of the owner's ability to donate. If your pet has had a previous rabies vaccination, bring the certificate with you so that your pet may receive a three year vaccination. Without the certificate, your pet will receive a one-year vaccination. Pets must be under the control of their owner while at the clinic.
