Applying for Nursing Home Care
Most caregivers find the process of nursing home placement very difficult. Feelings of guilt, the task of finding the right facility and financing it can make placing your loved one overwhelming.
Here are some tips to make this process go as smoothly as possible. First, be aware that nursing home placement does take time. Don’t wait for a crisis to begin planning. Start by scheduling an appointment with Broome County CASA for a nurse to meet with and evaluate your loved one for nursing home care. Next, schedule appointments with the admissions departments of the nursing homes where you would like your loved one placed. To help with this, visit “Nursing Home Compare” on the www.Medicare.gov website. You’ll find information on facilities that are certified by Medicare and Medicaid as well as the guidebook, Choosing a Nursing Home, which includes a nursing home checklist for when you visit. Also, you’ll want to assemble all the financial statements that show your sources of your income and the value of your assets and debt. Nursing home care can be costly and Medicare does not cover long-term care in a nursing home. Many people need financial assistance from Medicaid to cover long-term nursing home costs.
To learn more about Medicaid and nursing home care, plan to attend Medicaid—When It’s Time to Apply and Guidelines for Spouses with Assets. This presentation will be held on Wednesday, April 24 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street in
