Benefits of a Structured Social Program for Alzheimer’s Patients
People suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias tend to become more socially isolated as the disease progresses. Besides the isolation, people start to have a hard time finding activities around the house that they can still engage in. Many start to sleep during the day or watch TV for hours at a time.
There is a great program to help families keep their loved ones socially engaged and actively stimulated. The Yesteryears Adult Day Program offers social opportunities and fun activities in a safe, structured environment. Benefits include: respite for the caregivers, new friendships established, a nutritious lunch, memory stimulating activities, and a feeling of self worth as participants succeed in individually modified activities.
The program is affordable. For Broome County residents aged 60 and over, there is a suggested contribution of $18.00 per day; this covers the program and a lunch at noon. There are two locations: one in Binghamton and one in Endwell. Both are open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Drop-off and pick-up times are flexible within these hours.
Here is what some caregivers have to say about the program:
- “My wife really looks forward to going to Yesteryears. She was a social person before she got Alzheimer’s. By attending the adult day program she is socially connected to new friends and it gives me some time for myself” Sam
- “Dad didn’t want to go to the first or second visit. But with the information that the staff provided, we were able to get through the difficult beginning period. Now he loves going.” Mrs. B
