Upcoming Programs for Family Caregivers

-A A +A

Being a caregiver can be challenging, stressful but also rewarding.  As part of the Broome County Office for Aging’s Caregiver Services, monthly education programs are offered free of charge to help support family caregivers.  By educating yourself on available programs and supports, you can gain some good information to help yourself and the one you care for.  Below is a sampling of two educational programs scheduled for this fall.

On Thursday, September 15, Robert Stapleton of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will speak on scams targeting older people and their loved ones.  ‘Protect Yourself and A Loved One from Being Victimized’ will be held at the Broome West Senior Center in Endwell from 11:00 am – 12:00 noon.  Officer Stapleton will provide the latest tips on how to avoid becoming the victim of a scam, as well as information on identity theft, the do-not-call registry and details of the new Lifesaver Program.

Thursday, October 13 will feature an interactive workshop.  ‘Dementia Conversations’ will take place on the second floor of Lourdes on Shippers Road in Vestal from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.  Whitney Handley from the Central New York Alzheimer’s Association will discuss ways families and friends can effectively communicate with loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.  In addition strategies for discussing difficult topics such as driving, legal and financial matters will be explained.

Please call the Office for Aging to register for these programs, as space is limited.
