Father’s Day Shopping Begins with Elder Friendly Businesses

Businesses all over the country are helping families celebrate fathers this month with special Father’s Day sales and services. And with 8,000 Americans turning 60 each day, it makes sense that Father’s Day shopping should begin with businesses that are certified “Elder Friendly”.

Smart business owners know that improved access to older consumers is important to be competitive. They invest in special features like no-step entrances, wheel chairs for customer use at the front door, spacious aisles, great lighting, personalized assistance and a courteous, respectful service team. They know that Elder Friendly business practices benefit everyone.

That’s why the Elder Friendly® Business Certification Program continues to set a national standard for how businesses can best serve older customers. Using rigorous guidelines, adult volunteers make undercover visits to businesses and rate them on phone and physical access, store layout, and customer service.

Locally, 34 businesses have successfully met the evaluation criteria and are certified Elder Friendly. This is a clear sign to older adults and their families that these businesses value their patronage and have made an effort to meet their special needs.

So whether you’re an older adult who appreciates helpful customer service or you’re caring for someone – a father or grandfather - who could benefit from special accommodations, you’ll want to check out the local businesses that proudly display the Elder Friendly logo. Visit AOP’s Elder Friendly webpage at www.ActionforOlderpersons.org for a Directory of Elder Friendly certified businesses.

And new this summer, AOP is bringing “Elder Friendly means . . .” information sessions to senior centers throughout Broome County. Learn more about evaluation process businesses undergo and how you can become an Elder Friendly volunteer. Some local Elder Friendly businesses will be on-hand to share their experiences with the program. Call AOP at 722-1251 for dates, times and locations.
