Free Collection & Disposal of Unwanted Medications

In conjunction with United Way of Broome County’s Annual Day of Caring on September 9, 2011, Action for Older Persons, Inc. (AOP) is hosting a free medication collection event for local residents to promote environmentally safe disposal of all medications.

Why Should I Participate? It’s a great way to safely dispose of any unwanted and/or unused medications that may be lingering in your cabinets. Remember, the elderly are prone to having vision limitations and having “extra” bottles of unused or expired drugs in the medicine cabinet could lead to tragic consequences if accidently taken. So staff at AOP recommends you purge your cabinets, drawers and closets and dispose of the “extras” in a safe way. (Medications should NOT be flushed down the toilet or thrown in the garbage as they end up in our water system and contaminate the waters!)

What Should I Bring to the Collection Site? Expired or unwanted prescription medicines, vitamins, herbals, over the counter medicines and veterinary medicines will be accepted. Do not bring thermometers, needles, medical wastes. NO pharmaceutical business wastes will be accepted.

What Will Happen? Community volunteers and police officers will be present to supervise the collection. All medicine will be sent to a hazardous waste facility for secure incineration. No medicine will be re-used or re-sold. You will be asked a few general questions, such as town of residence, why you’re discarding the medicine, and how you heard about this event. No personal information will be collected.

What About Personal Information on Rx Labels? Use a black marker to cross off your name. Be sure to leave the name of the medication visible.

Where Do I Go? Bring your unwanted medications to AOP’s offices, 32 West State Street (Colonial Plaza), Binghamton on Friday, September 9, 10 am - 2pm.
