GROW Can Help With Spring Chores

Do you need your front steps repaired or the trim on your house painted?  Do you need help with yard work? There are many jobs, big and small, that need to be done in the spring to maintain a home.  If you need help with these jobs, call GROW.

GROW, Gaining Resources for Older Workers, is a program of the Broome County Office for Aging that matches workers 55 or older with seniors who need help in their homes.  Mrs. B. needed someone to mow her lawn and to trim the bushes.  She also needed the front door screen installed and the air conditioner put in the window.  After a friend recommended she call GROW, Mrs. B got connected with a GROW worker, Bill.  He called her and arranged to look over the jobs.  After they agreed on the rate of pay and other details, Bill got right to work.

Mr.  J has always kept up on his home maintenance—doing almost all the work himself.  When health problems made it impossible to fix a dripping faucet, he called GROW.  John called him and repaired the faucet shortly afterwards.  Mr. J was so pleased with John’s work that he’s called him back for other jobs.

GROW workers do a wide range of repair and maintenance jobs such as carpentry, electrical and plumbing.  They do outdoor jobs such as cleaning out the gutters, mowing the lawn, and raking leaves.  Inside the home, they clean houses, basements and garages.  They also provide personal care, make meals and keep someone company.  If you need a ride to the doctor’s office, GROW workers do that, too.

For more information, call GROW at 778-6105 between 8:30 and noon, Monday through Friday, and talk to Sue.  She will ask you the details of the job and your address and phone number. A GROW worker will call you to talk about the job.  If you agree on the conditions of work and the rate of pay, the worker will do the job.  Depending on the type of job, you might want to ask the worker for references or other proof that the worker can do the job.

So give GROW a try and see if it works for you.
