Hiring Help to Stay Independent

Do you—or does someone you care for—want to stay at home even after you start needing a little help with household chores or personal care? If yes, can you see yourself as the boss of a personal attendant or household employee?   The first step can be a huge emotional leap, we know; it can be a big task to hire and supervise help in your home. But developing these skills can often be part of aging comfortably.

The good news is that the Office for Aging a booklet for you that can help you with the hiring process when family and friends cannot meet all of your needs.  The recently updated "Hiring the Help You Need" has tips on what to talk about during the interview of a potential worker. It has a sample form to use for references; it even has a sample form for a simple contract with your new helper.

You may be wondering: Where can I look for helpers? What about employment taxes and insurance? Can anyone help me assess my homecare needs? These are covered in the booklet. Start today to think about how to have the best possible relationship with a care attendant or chore provider.
