Many of us have access to the internet from home or through the computers at local senior centers or libraries. In cyber space, we explore health-related information, plan vacations, and shop for deals. Today, social networking is an exciting feature accessible to anyone with a computer; and nearly 16 million people age 55 and better use Facebook.
Embracing this technology is a great way to communicate with family, reconnect with friends, share experiences through pictures, videos, and even play games. It’s also a great way to keep in touch with happenings at your senior center. If you’re already a Facebook user, we hope you’ll “like” your favorite center.
If you’re new to Facebook, here’s how you can get connected to your local center. Visit www.gobroomecounty.com/senior and select “senior centers” on the left. Scroll down the center listings to find the Facebook links—then click on the link for your favorite center. It will take you right to the Facebook page. You can read about the latest events and activities right there, but it’s even more convenient if you take the time to set up your own account—then the center news will be delivered right to your own Facebook page.
There’s a box on the right (it asks if you want to like or comment on this page). If you don’t already have an account, select sign-up. It takes only a little time to understand how to sign-up for an account, create a profile, and adjust privacy settings.
“Liking” a page is a great way to automatically receive information that you want to know—such as updates on OFA events and links to other websites that have information you’ll find valuable. And it opens the door to a world of connections!
