Keep Walking--Indoors!
Winter isn’t a reason to stop your exercise routine—and it isn’t a reason not to start one! The Office for Aging has teamed up with local school districts to offer senior citizens a variety of indoor walking sites during the winter months. The program offers you a well-lit, temperature-controlled environment with no slippery sidewalks to worry about.
Seniors can walk Monday through Friday during scheduled times (which vary by site).
When the schools are closed for holidays or snow days, there will be no walking program. Sites are open until April 30. To get information on participating sites, walking times, and the required registration forms, you can call the Office for Aging at 778-2411, or check out the Office for Aging website at http://www.gobroomecounty.com/senior/healthed.
Did you know that walking is the safest form of exercise? And did you know that staying physically active reduces your risk for most chronic diseases such as diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease, even memory loss? Exercising can also increase flexibility; help you sleep better; protect against hip fractures; relieve arthritis and back pain; and give you more energy. Exercising can help fight off those winter blues by lessening symptoms of depression and anxiety. Can you believe walking can even improve your ability to make decisions, solve problems, and focus!
Before you start a new exercise program, check with your physician. Then grab your sneakers, head to the school nearest you and start walking!
