Keeping Cool at the Senior Centers

Summer is officially here and lots of activities are moving outdoors.  Yet escaping the summer heat is important to many people over age 60.

You can keep safe from extreme heat by staying in air-conditioned spaces, drinking lots of water, wearing light clothes and avoiding extended periods in the sun—although the occasional barbeque never hurt anyone.

Find air-conditioning and a variety of activities at any of the eleven senior centers in Broome County.  You can also enjoy a delicious hot lunch without heating up your own kitchen.  There is always something going on and persons of any age may enjoy the cool climate.

Dabble at the summer tradition of reading a good book by attending a book review.  The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister will be reviewed by Cheryl Ebert at the Oak Street Senior Center on Monday, July 6 at 11 am.  This book was recommended on National Public Radio.

“A Day in the Life of a Revolutionary Soldier” will be presented at Broome West Senior Center at 11 am on Wednesday, July 8.  George Cummings dresses in an authentic Revolutionary War uniform complete with weapons and cookware.  Our forefathers wore wool uniforms, so he will be glad to speak in an air-conditioned room.

Harpist Theodore Davenport will perform at Eastern Broome Senior Center on Thursday, July 16, at 4 pm.  His selections will “Celebrate America” and will be cleverly orchestrated over the stings of his harp. If you think you know the harp, think again.  Ted’s talent will hold you spellbound.  This event includes a roast beef dinner and chocolate éclair! Call 693-2069 to make a reservation.

“Fishing Our Local Waters - Old and New Techniques” will be presented by fishing guide John Hahn on Tuesday, July 21 at 1 pm at Greenman Senior Center. Learn about changes in fishing gear and the advantages of both old and new equipment. Photographs taken on the St. Lawrence bring the sport alive.

Summer fun can be indoors or out.  If your home does not have air-conditioning, a trip to a Broome County senior center is a way to keep cool.  Details are available by calling 778-2411.  These activities and others are described online at www.gobroomecounty.com/senior/scc
