Living Healthy with Diabetes

Are you one of the 23.6 million Americans who have diabetes or one of the 57 million Americans who have pre-diabetes?  Managing diabetes can be overwhelming but there is a way to take control of your health.  The Stanford Patient Education Research Center has designed and tested a diabetes self management program that is effective in helping participants improve their health status.

The Broome County Office for Aging and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) have teamed up to offer the “Living Healthy with Diabetes” program locally. There is no charge for participating in the program.

This series of six workshops covers techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes: fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration. Participants learn about appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance, healthy eating, the appropriate use of medication, and how to work more effectively with health care providers.

They will also make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.
Each participant will receive a copy of the book Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions and an audio relaxation CD.

Register for the class by calling RSVP at 231-0726 or email dkerins@ccbc.net. Or contact RSVP to arrange a workshop for your own group of 12 to 18 people.

Don’t hesitate to call. Susan called and this is what she said after completing the workshop:When I started the workshop I was angry because I have diabetes and it seems so unfair. Since taking the workshop I feel at peace and in control of my life and know how to manage my diabetes and deal with it.”
