NYSEG Energy Assistance Program

It’s August: Who wants to think about energy bills? If your income is low and you receive the federal Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) credit on your heating account, you may be able to save some money. HEAP recipients who heat with electric or natural gas from NYSEG may be aware that they automatically receive a monthly credit on their NYSEG bill through a separate NYSEG Energy Assistance Program (EAP).

But if your HEAP award goes another fuel vendor, you may not realize that you can get a NYSEG EAP credit on an active NYSEG account.  For example, you buy heating oil and qualify for the once-per-season HEAP credit on your oil bill--and you also have an electric account with NYSEG. In this case, you can still get the NYSEG EAP credit but you have to enroll in the program to get it.

This is how to enroll in the NYSEG EAP if you do not have a NYSEG heating account: Send a copy of your HEAP award letter to NYSEG by fax or by mail. The fax number is 1-800-325-9920. The address is Energy Assistance Program, NYSEG, P.O. Box 5220, Binghamton, NY 13902-9936.

The customer, not the office that processed the HEAP application, receives the HEAP award letter. Keep it in a safe place and send a copy, not the original, since the original notice may be needed as proof of HEAP eligibility for other programs.  Visit nyseg.com and click on “Your Account” for more information on NYSEG’s EAP. Or call1-800-572-1111.

Watch for news on HEAP for 2011-2012 later this fall. Seniors can call the Office for Aging HEAP message line at 778-2063 for current HEAP guidelines and directions on how to apply when HEAP opens.
