Preventing Elder Abuse

Elder abuse can be hard to recognize.  When we think of abuse, we usually think of physical abuse but the most frequently reported types of abuse are emotional abuse and financial victimization.  The New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study, just released last month, helps break down the perception that physical mistreatment is the most common abuse.    The study also found for every senior who reports being abused, there are 34 others who will not or can not tell anyone of their abuse.

The elderly can be victimized in many ways.  The abusers are frequently people close to the elderly person:  a family member or a caregiver.  These abusers may have access to the senior’s bank card, credit card, check book, and other assets.  It can be difficult for seniors who are being abused to see that the people whom they believe are trying to help them remain independent are exploiting them financially.  Abuse by family members or caregivers can include withholding medications or medical supplies, threats, or failing to provide proper care.  Elders may be victimized by strangers as well; phone calls requesting donations or personal information may be an attempt to exploit the senior financially.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  It is an excellent time for all community members to be alert to signs of elder abuse. If you suspect that an elderly person is being victimized, please call Adult Protective Services at the Department of Social Services in your county.  In Broome County the number to call is 778-2635, or call the state-wide number, 1-800-342-3009, and press option 6 to make a report.  Reports can also be made to the local police.  We all need to be alert to potential abuse and help protect the vulnerable seniors in Broome County.
