Senior Legal Clinic

Broome County Bar Association and Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York have again joined forces to sponsor the Senior Legal Clinic. Back by popular demand, this year’s event, "The Fifth Annual Senior Legal Clinic," is just around the corner. Please join us on Saturday, October 15, at our new location: Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton, between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. We’ll be in the Exhibit Room on the second floor. Parking is free. Registration is required! Please call Arlene Sanders at (607) 231-5949 or Sindy Garey at (607) 723-6331 to schedule your appointment.

The clinic allows seniors, age 60 and over, a free private half hour appointment with an attorney experienced in an area of law that they have questions about. Available topics include debt collection and bankruptcy, estate and Medicaid planning, powers of attorney, health care proxies, housing, real estate, grandparents’ rights, and more.
Common types of legal questions include:

  • A retired couple have paid off their mortgage. They are considering a home equity loan to finance the purchase of a motor home. But the couple are concerned about depleting a major asset should they require long term care.
  • A recent widow is overwhelmed by all the bills that her spouse used to pay. Her daughter lives nearby and has suggested that her mother give her power of attorney to take care of financial matters.
  • An elderly woman lives on a small fixed income. She sometimes charges medications and groceries to her credit cards. She has accumulated substantial credit card debt and she wonders if she should file for bankruptcy.
We look forward to seeing you and answering your questions at this year’s clinic!
