The Senior Resource Line Can Answer Your Questions

“What services do you offer?” is often the question people ask when they call the Senior Resource Line at the Broome County Office for Aging. They’re not sure they want to reveal their name or their personal circumstances and that’s okay. They may have a problem with maintaining their independence--or they are concerned about a family member, a friend, or a neighbor.

Well, they have called the right place. “Tell us what the problem is; we can make suggestions that will help!” we reply.

Promoting the dignity and independence of the older person is a big part of our mission here at the Office for Aging. Just when you are scared you might lose your independence, we’re here to discuss ways that you might be able to maintain or increase it!

Maybe you’re not ready to declare “Sign me right up for that service!” Want some pamphlets? You might want to talk to other family members first. Or you may have more nuts and bolts questions. Perhaps you know that it might be months or even years before your senior will ever say yes to anything! But calling now gives you information about the alternatives that you can choose when the time is right.

Then there is always the “What is it going to cost?” question. You may not know how much you want to talk about this, but everyone’s wallet can only stretch so far. Is there any funding for a service when a senior has a very tight budget?

Call the Senior Resource Line and let’s dig in. Tell us the topic: Is it home care, or adult day care, or some other kind of break for a tired caregiver? Are you worried about a senior’s mental health?  What about options for health and wellness programs?   Is a senior getting isolated and could use more socialization?   Or would you like your own copy of the Office for Aging handout called “Financial Benefits for Seniors”?  Aren’t insurance issues overwhelming sometimes? Have you seen our “Senior Apartment Housing Guide”? How do I get a ride on that white minibus I’ve seen?   These are some of the most frequent types of calls, but certainly not all of them.

Remember, all questions are fair game.  Our goal is the same as yours: Let’s brainstorm a plan to address your needs.

Call the Senior Resource Line at 778-2411. Help is available weekdays from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. You can learn more about OFA at http://www.gobroomecounty.com/senior/.
