Senior Services: Having Your Say
Do you have ideas on how to improve services for seniors? Do you provide care for an elderly person and have ideas about how to support caregivers? You can share your thoughts on the issues and services affecting seniors and their caregivers by attending the Broome County Office for Aging Public Hearing. The public hearing begins at 1:00 on Thursday, October 29, at the Broome West Senior Center located at 2108 Wayne Street in Endwell.
The public hearing is part of the Office for Aging’s annual planning process. Office for Aging staff spent time this summer learning about issues affecting the lives of seniors and caregivers in Broome County. Seniors and their caregivers expressed concerns about the following issues: accessing information, caregiver support, housing, social connections, mental health, home care, transportation, health and prescription drug insurance, and financial benefits.
At the public hearing, Office for Aging staff will share what they learned over the summer about these issues, and they will discuss the draft version of the agency’s updated Plan for Services 2010-2012. During the discussion, staff will describe how the Office for Aging plans to address the needs of Broome County seniors and caregivers.
After the presentation, those attending will have an opportunity to voice their concerns during a public comment period. Speakers may comment on the needs facing seniors and their caregivers and react to the Office for Aging’s plans for addressing those needs. Speakers will have up to five minutes each to make their remarks and are encouraged to identify needs and concerns that the staff did not discuss during the presentation. Office for Aging staff will consider all comments when writing the final version of the Plan for Services 2010-2012.
To request a copy of the Draft Plan for Services 2010-2012, or obtain more information on the public hearing, call 778-2411. Those unable to attend the public hearing may submit written comments through October 31, 2009. Send written comments to the Broome County Office for Aging, PO Box 1766, Binghamton, NY 13902.
Government works best when citizens participate; those who speak at the Office for Aging’s public hearing do make a difference.
