Should You Seek a Guardianship for an Elderly Relative?

The Broome County Office for Aging will host a workshop on “Guardianship and Alternatives.” It will be held on Monday, September 12, from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Exhibit Room at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton. The speaker will be Alyssa M. Barreiro, Esq., from Levene, Gouldin and Thompson, LLP.

As people age, they may become less able to manage their daily lives and property management. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity or to the loss of loved ones who can assist them. What resources are available to protect these vulnerable individuals? Appointment of agents under powers of attorney and health care proxies are options, but sometimes these arrangements are not possible or may not be advisable. The presentation will cover how guardianship or alternatives can work when other choices fall short.

This program is one of many offered by the Office for Aging whose Caregiver Services staff provides support and information to caregivers who care for an older person. This support includes: referrals to community services, Caregiver Corner Newsletter, caregiver discussion groups, respite options, the Caregiver Resource Center, and workshops on caregiver concerns.

There is no cost to attend “Guardianship and Alternatives” but reservations are requested. Call Caregiver Services at 778-2411 to reserve your spot—or to get connected to a wide array of services.
