Take Steps to Prevent Dangerous Falls
All New Yorkers should take precautions to prevent potentially serious falls, especially those who are age 65 and older—this was the message on National Falls Prevention Day which was September 23.
“Falls often lead to serious injuries that can limit mobility and impact a person’s daily life, but taking simple steps to prevent falls can minimize the risk,” said State Health Commissioner Nirav R. Shah, M.D., M.P.H. Falls are the leading cause of deaths from injuries, hospitalizations and emergency department visits for older adults in New York State.
Falls are not a natural part of aging. A few of the simple steps that you can take to prevent falls are to make some easy modifications to your home, have your medications checked, have your vision checked, or start a regular exercise program.
The Broome County Office for Aging is holding a Balance Clinic on Tuesday, October 18, from 1:30 – 4:00 pm at the Broome West Senior Center at 2801 Wayne Street in Endwell. The clinic will help you determine your risk for falls and, most importantly, give you strategies to help prevent future falls. Please take action now and call the Office for Aging to sign yourself or a loved one up for the free balance clinic.
You may register by calling the Office for Aging at 607-778-2411. The deadline to register is October 17th. Please call soon; the clinic will fill up quickly.
