Workshops Let You Take Control of Diabetes
Are you one of the more than one million New Yorkers who have been diagnosed with diabetes? Do you know that 7% of the population has diabetes?
Managing diabetes can be challenging, confusing and overwhelming. However, there is a way to take control of your health and find inspiration for living life to the fullest while managing your diabetes. The Stanford (University) Patient Education Center has designed and tested a diabetes self-management program that is effective in helping participants take control of their diabetes and improve their health status, while reducing the use of hospital care and physicians services.
RSVP of Broome County and the Broome County Office for Aging have teamed up to offer this program, Living Healthy with Diabetes, locally. People who have participated in the program report they feel better and have more energy and self-efficacy. Living Healthy with Diabetes is a 2 ½ hour workshop that meets once a week for six weeks. It’s available without charge for diabetics, pre-diabetics and caregivers. A free workbook, relaxation CD and a healthy snack at the break are also provided.
Diabetes can be challenging, but there is a healthy way to live with the condition. By making the choice to be an active manager, you can achieve the greatest possible physical capability and derive more pleasure from life.
Summer workshops are being formed now. To sign up for a scheduled workshop or have a class held for your own organization, call RSVP at 231-0726 or e-mail dkerins@ccbc.net.
