As flood and flash flood waters recede, rural Broome County residents with private water wells should consider shock disinfecting their wells and testing the water quality under the following conditions:

• Flood waters have overtopped or surrounded the well casing.

• Flood waters have come within 100 feet of the casing, especially in sandy and gravelly areas.

• There has been a change in the color, taste, odor or cloudiness of the well water.
