Yesteryears Volunteers Make a Difference
If you are looking for a place to share your love and have it returned in abundance, we have the perfect experience for you. Yesteryears is an adult day program that provides Broome County seniors with structured, supervised recreational activity in a warm, caring environment. Yesteryears is operated by Office for Aging; there are sites in both Binghamton and Endwell. Many of the seniors we serve are frail, isolated from their peers, and they may have other impairments. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain a better understanding of our aging population and the changes that occur as we age.
Does a volunteer need “special talents”? No, but here are some things that make a good volunteer: a sense of humor, respect for others, flexibility, patience, a desire to feel needed, dependability, respect for the elderly, and a warm, caring smile.
Volunteers assist with recreational projects, exercise, and trivia games. Our activities stimulate memory and conversation and assist in the development of friendships, and increase the participants' self-esteem. Other volunteer duties might include getting to know individual program participants, serving coffee or juice, helping to serve lunch, and assisting or leading activities. We want this experience to be enjoyable and fun. Everyone has special talents and we encourage all volunteers to suggest and develop their own activity ideas. Volunteers are such blessings to our devoted staff as they free up precious time so that individual attention may be given to needs of specific participants. Mary has been volunteering now for four years and she says, “…these beautiful people make me feel like I have helped make them happy and making myself happy at the same time. I just love my time here”.
Training is provided to build competence and confidence with our therapeutic programming concepts. All we ask is a commitment of four hours each month. Of course, we would be pleased if you volunteered more or on a regular basis. Once committed and assigned, we plan on you because you are very valuable to us and to the success of our program.
So, are you excited? Come join us by calling 607.778.2946 to set a convenient time to come and visit and see what we are all about.
