BINGHAMTON, NY - Winning and honorable mention photographs from the Broome County Environmental Management Council's (EMC) 2004 Joyce K. L. Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition, will be displayed at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, in downtown Binghamton, from May 19 through June 30, 2004. The public is invited to attend an opening reception and awards ceremony, Wednesday, May 19 from 5 to 7 pm in the second floor gallery of the Library. Elevators are available and accessible.

Entrants to the Joyce K.L. Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition submitted photographs in five categories: Wildlife; Plantlife; Natural Landscape; Cultural Landscape; and People in Action. The EMC received 167 submissions from 61 amateur photographers. A local panel of judges selected a winner and up to five honorable mentions for each of the five categories. The Broome County Public Library (Binghamton), Garland Gallery (Binghamton), Slideways Graphics (Kirkwood), and Silver Image Photographics (Vestal) are co-sponsors of the show and competition.

The purpose of show and competition is to celebrate all aspects of Broome County's natural and cultural environment and the work of the EMC to protect and enhance it. The show and competition, now in its eighth year, is named in honor of Joyce K.L. Smith, a local advocate for the environment. The Joyce K.L. Smith Memorial Fund was established by her family to foster the EMC's environmental education efforts. Contributions to the Fund are welcome and appreciated.
