Executive Fiala Names New Transportation Commissioner

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala has appointed Gary J. Crandell Broome County Commissioner of Public Transportation. Crandell replaces John Kowalchyk who resigned in April to take a position on Long Island.
Crandell is a retired business teacher from the Binghamton City School District. Crandell also served as BC Transportation Commissioner from January of 1995 to December of 1996. Before that he was the Deputy Transportation Commissioner from 1989 to 1994.
“Gary has the public and private sector experience to be a good leader at BC Transit,” said Executive Fiala. “I look forward to working with Gary on improving BC Transit and making the operation a more efficient one.”
“I look forward to returning to BC Transit,” said Crandell. “I know the system, I know the people and I know how to navigate the state and federal funding issues. I’m looking forward to working with the County Executive and the staff to make this a transportation system we can all be proud of.”
Crandell is married and has three children. He is also a US Army Veteran. His first day back on the job will be Monday, June 19th.
