Broome County Government, many local school districts and several local municipalities have saved over $250,000 in energy costs thanks to a unique energy purchasing alliance.
Broome County has been a sponsoring government and partner with the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (M.E.G.A.) since June 2001. M.E.G.A. is a not-for-profit local development corporation with 6 counties as principal members, these members include; Broome, Cortland, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins counties. The alliance pools it's electric needs and purchases electricity from the lowest bidder. Growing membership in the alliance allows for a greater group purchase resulting in lower energy costs. There is no fee to join the alliance and members pay only for the energy they use. . .
