BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is sponsoring the Eighth Annual Joyce K.L. Smith Environmental Photography Show and Competition to celebrate the EMC's efforts to protect and improve Broome County's environment. The EMC invites amateur photographers to submit up to three (3) photographs illustrating Broome County's environment by Wednesday, March 10, 2004.

Photographs will be accepted in the following five (5) categories: Natural Landscape, Cultural Landscape, Wildlife, Plantlife, and People in Action. A group of local professional photographers and environmental specialists will select one (1) winner and no more than five (5) runners-up in each category. Prizes will be provided by co-sponsors Garland Gallery, Binghamton; Silver Image Photographics, Vestal; and Slideways Graphics, Kirkwood. There is no fee to enter, but donations to the Joyce K.L. Smith Memorial Fund c/o of the EMC are welcomed and appreciated.

Winners and those receiving honorable mentions will be recognized at an opening reception and awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton. The public is welcome to attend. The winning and honorable mention photographs will remain on display at the venue through June.

The photography show honors the late Joyce K. L. Smith, a long-time member of the EMC and local leader and environmental activist.
