Environmental Council Seeks Members

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC), a citizen environmental advisory board to County government, will accept membership applications through April 2004 to fill several vacancies. Interested individuals are invited to attend an Open House Thursday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Decker Room of the Broome County Public Library in Binghamton, NY to learn more about the work and activities of the EMC. Those interested are also encouraged to attend any of the EMC's monthly working committee meetings.
Seven county residents are needed to serve as members-at-large for a two-year term through 2005. A vacancy also exists for a local high school representative to serve a maximum of two, one-year terms during the school year. These are voting positions. Non-voting associate memberships will also be accepted at any time.
Volunteer members of the EMC conduct educational meetings and public information sessions, and prepare and present reports, plans, and advisory resolutions about a host of environmental issues. The Council also serves as the focus point for public participation in local government decisions affecting our environment. The Council's areas of interest include natural resource management, planning and sustainable redevelopment, and recycling and waste management.
While some members may have training in the environmental field, many are self-taught and come from a variety of backgrounds, including business, education, engineering, science and homemaking. Those under consideration should demonstrate a strong willingness and commitment to participate in the work of the Council. Candidates for voting seats are subject to EMC nomination, County Executive approval, and Legislative confirmation.
For a membership application, a calendar of upcoming meetings, or for more information about the EMC, please visit Broome County's website www.goBroomeCounty.com, or call 607.778.2116 during business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
